Troop L - NEWS RELEASE March 1, 2014 Single Vehicle Crash Kills Unrestrained Motorist in Washington Parish Early this morning at approximately 12:45 A.M., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on La. 38 near Franklinton in Washington Parish. The crash claimed the life of Roderick G. Mabon (B/M 54) of Franklinton. Preliminary investigation revealed that Mabon was operating a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 westbound on La. 38 east of Old Columbia Road. Mabon, for reasons under investigation, veered right, traveled off of the roadway, entered a ditch, traveled approximately 250 feet, and struck a tree. Mr. Mabon was not restrained and received fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected; however, a blood sample was collected from Mabon so toxicological analysis can be performed at the LSP Crime Lab. Those results are pending and this crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
