Impairment and No Seatbelt Use Contribute to Single Vehicle Fatal Crash

Folsom - Yesterday evening, at approximately 4:15 pm Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single vehicle crash on La. 40 west of La. 437 in St. Tammany Parish which left a Covington man dead.

Preliminary investigation revealed, that a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina operated by Woodruff Camus III (W/M 52) was traveling west on La. 40. Camus failed to negotiate a left hand curve, swerved left, and over-corrected causing the Chevrolet to travel off of the left portion of the roadway. After which, the Chevrolet struck a guard rail, several trees, and came to rest in a creek bed.

Camus was not restrained, received serious injuries, and was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital where he later was pronounced dead. Alcohol use is suspected and a blood sample was collected so a toxicological analysis could be performed. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists that impairment and lack of seatbelt use continues to be a leading factor in serious injury and fatal crashes. A person’s ability to make good decisions are diminished as alcohol is absorbed in the body. This can began after consuming just one drink. Troopers continue to urge motorists to remain vigilant while on area roadways, always buckle up, never drive impaired, and always have a plan to ensure an outing without drinking and driving.
