TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE Single Vehicle Crash Kills Zachary Man in St. Helena Parish St. Helena – Early this morning at approximately 6:30 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on La. 37 near La. 449 in St. Helena Parish. The crash claimed the life of Cody J. Damico of Zachary. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2010 Pontiac driven by Damico (W/M 29) was traveling eastbound on La. 37 near mile marker 41. Damico, for reasons under investigation, veered left, crossed the center line, traveled off of the left portion of the roadway, struck a utility pole, overturned, and came to rest in a ditch. Damico was ejected, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash, and was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. Damico was not restrained and impairment is unknown at this time; however, a blood sample was collected for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference the use of a seat belt makes in reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
