TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE Speed, Impairment, and No Seat Belt Use are Factors in Tangipahoa Parish Fatal Crash Hammond - Last night at approximately 7:50 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle crash which occurred on La. 443 north of US 190 in Tangipahoa Parish. The high speed crash claimed the life of a Husser man. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1997 Dodge pickup, operated by Steve Savoie (W/M 28) of Loranger and occupied by front passenger Adam Capdeboscq (W/M 35) of Husser was traveling south on La. 443 at a high rate of speed. Savoie, for reasons under investigation, veered to the left, exited the roadway, and lost control. The Dodge struck a culvert, overturned, and rolled over several times. Capdeboscq was not restrained, was ejected, received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office. Savoie was restrained and fled the scene on foot; however, he was apprehended by State Police shortly after. Impairment is suspected on Savoie's part and samples of his blood and urine were collected for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Savoie was arrested and booked in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite for Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Hit and Run, Suspended License, and Vehicular Homicide. Troopers wish to remind that driving impaired; riding with an impaired driver, lack of proper seat belt usage, and distracted driving are all individual choices that affect many more than the individual. Crashes are very preventable and these factors continue to be the leading causes of serious injury and fatality crashes across our state. Research has indicated that injury crashes occur in Louisiana approximately every seven and a half minutes due to poor decisions made by motorists. State Police urges everyone to have a plan to arrive safely at your destination. A responsible plan should include obeying all posted traffic control signs/devices, avoid distractions while behind the wheel, always choose a designated driver, and proper seat belt use by EVERYONE in the vehicle.
