Impairment is Suspected in Crash that Kills Unrestrained Passenger

Hammond - Last night at approximately 7:20 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle crash which occurred on La. 1064 north of US 190 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of the driver’s father.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Kia Sport, operated by Amber Hoyt (W/F 22) of Holden
and occupied by front passenger Douglas Hoyt (W/M 45) of Holden, was traveling south on La. 1064. A. Hoyt, for reasons under investigation, failed to negotiate a left curve, exited the roadway to the left, overcorrected, and lost control. The Kia crossed La. 1064, exited the roadway to the right, continued down an embankment, and struck a tree. D. Hoyt was not restrained, received life threatening injuries and was transported to North Oaks Medical Center where he later died.

A. Hoyt was restrained, received injuries, and was also transported to North Oaks Medical Center. Impairment is suspected on A. Hoyt’s part and samples of her blood and urine were collected for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. A. Hoyt was charged with Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, DWI, and Vehicular Homicide and will be booked upon release from North Oaks.

Making poor decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, driving while distracted, or not wearing a seat belt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Choosing to ALWAYS buckle up is the simplest thing you can do to protect yourself from serious injury or death when involved in any crash. Louisiana State Police urge motorists and occupants to take the time before every trip to buckle up!
