| l Troop L - NEWS RELEASE April 27, 2014 Pedestrian Struck and Killed While Walking on Interstate 55 Ponchatoula - Yesterday evening, shortly after 8:00 pm Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatality vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on I-55 near La. 22 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 20 year old pedestrian Lavarius Grisby (B/M) of Ponchatoula. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 GMC pick-up truck, operated by Michael K. Green (B/M 42) of Avondale, was traveling southbound in the left lane on I-55 near La. 22. Grisby was wearing dark colored clothing and walking with several pedestrians westbound on I-55. While walking westbound Grisby, for reasons under investigation, entered the southbound left lane, continued to walk, and was struck by the front of the GMC. Grisby received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office. Green was restrained, submitted to a breath test, and no detectable alcohol was found in his system. A blood sample was obtained from Grisby and will be submitted to the LSP Crime Lab for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Troopers urge both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Louisiana State Law prohibits pedestrians from crossing or walking on interstate systems and requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of travel lanes at all times.
