Overnight Crash Claims Two Lives in St. Helena Parish

Pine Grove, LA – Early this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a single vehicle crash that took the life of two Guatemalan foreign nationals. The crash occurred shortly after 1:20am on LA 449 approximately 1.5 miles north of LA 16 in St. Helena Parish.

Troopers’ investigation determined that a 1997 Lexus 300, driven by 30 year old Maximiliano Millian, was traveling south on LA 449 when, for unknown reasons, it drifted left across the centerline and northbound lane running off road to the left. Upon leaving the roadway, the Lexus entered the roadside ditch and struck a canal embankment causing it to become airborne and come to rest on the far side of the canal facing a southerly direction.

Millian and an unrestrained 18 year old front seat passenger in the Lexus received fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. Millian was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and impairment is unknown at this time pending toxicology results.

Troopers are actively searching for the 18 year old passenger’s next of kin at which time notification will be made and his identity will be released.

While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
