| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE January 14, 2013 Troopers Urge Caution Following Second Fatal Crash During Inclement Weather Conditions St. Tammany Parish- In the past 24 hours, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L have investigated two fatal crashes with three deaths resulting from careless driving behavior during inclement weather. The second crash occurred this morning shortly after 3:00 am on Interstate 12 approximately half a mile east of the Northshore Blvd./Airport Road exit in Slidell, LA. The single vehicle fatal crash took the life of an unrestrained rear seat passenger and resulted in two additional injuries. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2004 Lincoln LS, driven by 32 year old Cassidy Thompson (B/M of Amite, LA), was traveling east in the left lane of the interstate. As the Lincoln continued eastbound, Thompson failed to maintain control of the vehicle causing it to rotate in a clockwise direction as it ran off road to the south side of the highway. Upon leaving the paved roadway, the Lincoln struck a large tree on its rear end coming to rest off road facing west. Thompson and front seat passenger, 39 year old Monoletho Walker (B/M of Amite, LA), received minor injuries in the crash and were transported to the Ochsner Northshore Medical Center. Rear seat passenger in the Lincoln, 39 year old Jader Givines (B/M of Hammond, LA), received fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. None of the three occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Driver impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash pending the results of a toxicology examination. Upon being treated for his injuries, Thompson was transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail and booked on charges of Careless Operation, Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended License, and Negligent Homicide. With showers forecasted to continue throughout the week, drivers are reminded to slow down and take extra precautions during times of inclement weather as decreased traction on wet roadways combined with dangerous driving behavior often leads to tragic events. Motorists that witness hazardous situations and/or reckless drivers are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
