| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE January 18, 2013 Impairment Suspected in Tangipahoa Fatal Crash Ponchatoula, LA- Yesterday evening shortly after 10:00pm, a single vehicle crash on LA 445 resulted in the death of an unrestrained and suspected impaired driver. The crash took place approximately two miles north of LA 22 in Tangipahoa Parish. Troopers’ concluded that the crash occurred as a 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling north on LA 445 from Ponchatoula. As the pickup continued northbound, its right side tires drifted off the paved roadway causing the driver to overcorrect to the left. Due to the overcorrection, the Chevrolet rotated in a counterclockwise direction as crossed the centerline and southbound lane of LA 445 before running off road on the west side of the highway. Upon leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck a ditch embankment and overturned ejecting the unrestrained driver. The driver, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, was transported to North Oaks Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigating Troopers suspect driver impairment to be a factor in the crash and have submitted biological samples to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for examination. Once again, the presence of poor decisions such as driving while impaired and not wearing a seatbelt proved to be a fatal combination. Making these decisions while behind the wheel often leads to serious injuries and deaths every day in our state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.
