Troopers Arrest Hammond Resident
in Fatal Hit and Run Investigation

Following an extensive investigation into the fatal hit and run crash that took the life of a Hammond bicyclist, Troopers have arrested 51 year old Michael Murtagh of Hammond, LA on charges of Negligent Homicide and Hit and Run Driving.

The investigation revealed that Murtagh was driving northbound on LA 445 in his 2004 Saturn sedan when he impacted the bicyclist resulting in fatal injuries. Murtagh’s arrest took place following the discovery of the suspect vehicle by an alert off duty Trooper and the subsequent examination of physical evidence conducted by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Murtagh surrendered himself to Troopers this morning and was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the above charges.


Troopers Searching for Suspect Vehicle
in Fatal Hit and Run Crash

Robert, LA – Shortly after dawn this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L discovered a fatal hit and run crash scene on LA 445 approximately two miles north of U.S. 190 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash took the life of a 58 year old Hammond bicyclist, identified as Bruce D. Burge, and is expected to have occurred sometime before midnight yesterday evening.

Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as the bicyclist was traveling north on LA 445 when it was stuck from behind by an unknown maroon colored sedan. After impact, the suspect vehicle fled northbound on LA 445 leaving the bicyclist lying on the east shoulder of the roadway. Troopers are currently working to locate next of kin for the victim at which time the victim’s identity will be released.

Troopers are actively searching for the hit and run vehicle believed to be a maroon colored sedan, possibly a Saturn, with damage to its right front bumper, quarter panel, and windshield.
