Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE January 29, 2013 Impairment Suspected in Single Vehicle Fatal Crash St. Helena Parish- Yesterday evening shortly before 8:00 pm, a single vehicle crash on LA 38 took the life of 21 year old Ethel, LA resident Evan Vides. The crash occurred approximately two miles north of LA 10 in St. Helena Parish. Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Vides was traveling west on LA 38 in a 2000 Toyota pickup truck. As the pickup continued westbound, Vides failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway causing the vehicle’s right side tires to run off road. Vides overcorrected to the left causing the pickup to rotate counterclockwise as it crossed both lanes of LA 38 and ran off road to the left side of the highway. Upon leaving the paved roadway, the Toyota pickup struck several trees and overturned coming to rest on its roof facing a westerly direction. Vides sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol use is suspected with a toxicology analysis to be performed at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making poor decisions in a vehicle leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
