TROOP L NEWS RELEASE April 1, 2013 Troopers Investigate Early Morning Fatal Crash on Interstate 12 Robert, LA- A multi-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 12 this morning took the life of a 71 year old Covington woman identified as Terry Gerot. The three vehicle crash took place shortly after 6:00 am in the westbound lanes of the interstate at the LA 445 / Robert exit in Tangipahoa Parish. Troopers’ investigation revealed that prior to the fatal crash a 2005 Nissan sedan was stopped and disabled in the left westbound lane of I-12 from a previous unrelated incident. As the Nissan remained disabled in the left lane, a 2011 Dodge utility truck stopped behind the Nissan and activated its emergency flashers in an attempt to warn oncoming traffic. Shortly thereafter, Gerot, traveling west a 2003 Ford pickup truck, failed to observe the stopped vehicles and struck the rear of the Dodge pushing it forward into the disabled Nissan. Gerot was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Nissan, Kalin Mckenzie (W/M age 20) of Sandy Hook, MS, and driver of the Dodge truck, Michael Lawrence (W/M age 33) of Slidell, LA, were both properly restrained and received minor injuries in the crash. Driver impairment is not suspected to be a factor at this time. While the crash remains under investigation, Troopers urge drivers to be constantly vigilant of changing traffic conditions especially while traveling at interstate speeds. As always, the single most important proactive safety measure drivers and passengers should take is to be properly restrained at all times in every seating position.
