Troopers Investigate Morning Fatal Crash in St. Helena Parish

Greensburg, LA- Shortly after 9:00 am this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 10 at the St. Helena / Tangipahoa Parish line. The crash took the life of the unrestrained driver, 26 year old James Ponder of Mount Olive, MS.

Troopers’ investigation revealed that Ponder was traveling west on LA 10 in a 2007 Ford F-750 auger truck when he failed to slow down for stopped traffic and ran off the right side of the highway to avoid collision. As the Ford truck left the paved roadway, Ponder overcorrected to the left causing the vehicle to rotate in a counterclockwise direction as it reentered the highway. Upon rotating, the Ford truck overturned onto its right side and continued for approximately 70 feet before coming to rest facing a southwesterly direction.

Ponder was not wearing a sea tbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference wearing a seat belt makes in lessening the severity of injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Poor decisions while behind the wheel such as not wearing a seat belt and driving while intoxicated often leads to serious injuries and deaths every day in our state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.
