TROOP L NEWS RELEASE May 8, 2013 Motorcyclist Killed in Tangipahoa Parish Crash Loranger, LA- This morning shortly after 7:00am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash which resulted in the death of 24 year old Louis Perkins of Luling, LA. The crash took place on LA 40 at the intersection of Passman road approximately 1.5 miles west of LA 1062 in Tangipahoa Parish. Troopers’ investigation revealed that prior to the crash, Perkins was traveling east on LA 40 on a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle. As Perkins continued eastbound, a 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser began backing out of a private drive on the south side of the highway entering directly into the path of the Yamaha. Upon the PT Cruiser backing into the eastbound lane, investigating Troopers suspect that Perkins attempted to avoid collision by entering the westbound lane and passing the vehicle. During the passing maneuver, the PT Cruiser abruptly turned left onto Passman Road resulting in the motorcycle colliding with the vehicle’s left driver side while across the westbound lane of travel. After impact, Perkins was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest approximately 75 feet from the point of impact in the intersection. Perkins was wearing a helmet, however sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Driver impairment is not suspected. Driver of the PT Cruiser, 63 year old Christine Lynn of Loranger, LA, was wearing a seatbelt and received no injuries in the crash. She submitted to a breath alcohol test showing no detectable signs of alcohol in her system. Lynn was subsequently booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of Failure to Yield from a Private Drive and Negligent Homicide. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued or impaired, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road.
