One Driver Dead After Head-on Collision

SORRENTO- A Baton Rouge man died this afternoon after his vehicle was struck head-on by an 18-wheeler on LA Hwy 70 in St. James Parish.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash on LA Hwy east of the Sunshine Bridge. A 2002 GMC Yukon, driven by Nathan J. Folse of Baton Rouge (B/M, age 52), was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 70 east of the Sunshine Bridge when he was struck head-on by an 18-wheeler tanker truck. The 2008 International tanker, driven by Gregory P. Stagg of Baton Rouge (W/M, age 53), was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 70 when it crossed the centerline and struck Folse’s vehicle. Both vehicles were forced off the roadway after the collision. Folse was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash by the St. James Parish Coroner’s Office.

The tanker truck, owned by Southern Ionics, caught fire after the collision. The tank trailer was not loaded at the time and contained only residue of an aqueous ammonia solution. The tank was not breached and none of the residual contents were released. St. James Parish Fire Departments extinguished the fire. Troopers and St. James Parish Sheriff’s deputies closed LA Hwy 70 between LA Hwy 3125 and the Sunshine Bridge while the scene was being investigated.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, blood was taken from both drivers and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Stagg was arrested and charged with Negligent Homicide and Driving Left of Center. He was booked into the St. James Parish Prison.

State Police is reminding drivers that impaired driving due to alcohol, controlled dangerous substances, prescription and even over the counter medication is illegal in Louisiana. Don’t take the chance with your life or someone else’s.
