TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE October 2, 2016 Loranger Resident Killed in Single Vehicle Crash on LA 443 Loranger, LA- Shortly after 9:00 AM on Sunday October 2, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 443 near the intersection of Lanier Rd. in Loranger, LA. The crash claimed the life of 69 year-old Loranger resident Alfred F. Dykes. Dykes had previously been reported as a missing person when he failed to return from routine errands on Saturday October 1, 2016. Troopers are working to determine exactly when the crash occurred. The preliminary investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Dykes was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van southbound on LA 443. As Dykes entered a curved portion of the roadway, his vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. Evidence indicated that Dykes’ vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway for over 500 feet before crashing into the ditch embankment at the intersection of Lanier Rd. and LA 443. The impact with the embankment caused the van to become airborne as it crossed Lanier Rd. The van came to final rest in a creek that crosses LA 443 south of Lanier Rd. Measurements taken at the scene indicated to crash scene investigators that the van traveled nearly 700 feet from the point where it initially exited the roadway to where it came to final rest in the creek. Despite proper restraint use, Dykes sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash. As part of the on-going investigation, Troopers obtained blood samples. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers implore Louisiana motorists to adhere to safe practices behind the wheel. While not necessarily a factor in this crash, speed, impairment, distractions, and unrestrained occupants continue to be primary factors in preventable crashes on Louisiana roadways. Please, speak with your loved ones about the importance of safe decisions while behind the wheel.
