TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE
October 22, 2016
Passenger Killed in Single Vehicle Crash on LA 442 in Tangipahoa Parish

Independence, LA- Shortly before 5:00 PM, on Friday October 21, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 442 east of the Tangipahoa River Bridge. The crash claimed the life of 68 year-old Keil Heinz Albers of Husser, LA.

Crash scene investigators determined the crash occurred as 60 year-old Gary A. Passman of Husser, LA was driving a 1992 Mazda Miata westbound on LA 442. For reasons still under investigation, Passman’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. Passman overcorrected to the left, causing his vehicle to travel off the left side of the roadway. After traveling down an embankment, Passman’s vehicle overturned and came to rest upside down.

Despite being properly restrained, Passman’s front seat passenger, Keil Heinz Albers, was severely injured in the crash. Albers was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Passman was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He sustained moderate injuries and was transported to North Oaks Health Systems. Presently, Troopers do not suspect speed or impairment to have been factors in this crash. As part of the on-going investigation, Troopers obtained voluntary blood samples from Passman. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and any criminal charges will be referred to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Troopers would like to remind Louisiana motorists the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Please speak to your loved ones about the importance of avoiding distractions, never driving impaired and always wearing a seatbelt.
