TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE December 13, 2016 Unrestrained 19 Year-Old Mississippi Resident Killed in Single Vehicle Crash on Interstate 59 Slidell, LA- A young unrestrained driver has succumbed to the injuries she sustained after being involved in a single vehicle crash. The crash occurred Monday December 12, 2016 just before 3:00 PM on Interstate 59 just north of Interstate 10 in Slidell. The crash has claimed the life of 19-year-old Denise A. Phillips of Pass Christian, Mississippi. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that Phillips was driving a 2007 Kia Optima northbound on Interstate 59 in the right lane. For reasons still under investigation, Phillips lost control of her vehicle, causing it to exit the roadway to the right. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle crashed into a tree and overturned, ejecting Phillips. Phillips was unrestrained at the time of the crash. She sustained moderate injuries and was transported to University Medical Center New Orleans by Acadian Air in critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Phillips succumbed to her injuries. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash. As part of the on-going investigation, Troopers obtained blood samples form Phillips. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. While not all crashes are survivable, simply buckling up greatly increases your chances of surviving a crash. Please, speak to your loved ones about the importance of always wearing a seatbelt, never driving impaired and avoiding distractions. The advice you share, could be lifesaving.
