Troopers in Slidell Investigate Fatal Labor Day Crash on Interstate 10

Slidell, LA- Shortly after 12:00 PM on Monday September 5, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a three vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 westbound near Old Spanish Trial in Slidell. The crash claimed the life of 26 year-old Steven Fernandez of Bergenfield, New Jersey.

The preliminary investigation led Troopers to determine that a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 66 year-old Lacombe resident, Milton Frank, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10. At the time of the crash, the roadway was wet and it was raining heavily. For reasons still under investigation, Mr. Frank lost control of his vehicle, crossing through the median and into the westbound lanes of Interstate 10. After crossing the median, Mr. Frank’s Tahoe was hit head-on by a 2016 BMW 328i driven by Steven Fernandez. Following the collision with the BMW, the Tahoe was hit by a second vehicle, a 2002 Honda Accord, which was driven by 24 year-old Irvin Darensbourg of New Orleans, LA. The three vehicles came to final rest within the westbound lanes of Interstate 10.

Despite being properly restrained, Mr. Fernandez sustained fatal injuries during the crash. He was pronounced deceased on-scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Danielle Carballeira, a 26-year-old Statin Island, NY resident, was a front seat passenger in the BMW. Carballeira and Frank, the driver of the Tahoe, were both properly restrained at the time of the crash. They both sustained moderate injuries in the crash and were each transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. Irvin Darensbourg provided Troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present. Troopers also obtained blood samples from Milton Frank and Steven Fernandez. The samples will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Any criminal charges will be referred to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office pending the outcome of the crash investigation.

Troopers would like to remind motorist traveling in inclement weather to be mindful of the conditions. Louisiana law requires that no person should drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions. Furthermore, motorists are also required to put on their headlights in heavy rain. Please, speak to your loved ones about these safety precautions as well as seatbelts, distractions, and safe sober driving. The conversation could be lifesaving.
