TROOP L –NEWS RELEASE August 04, 2016 Pedestrian Crash on US 51 in Hammond Claims Life of Independence Woman Hammond, LA- Shortly after 4:30 AM this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal pedestrian crash on US 51 in Hammond. The crash claimed the life of 45 year-old Independence resident Karen Rae Phillips. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that Phillips was walking within the northbound lane of US 51 near the intersection of Kohnke Hill Rd. As Phillips was walking, she was struck by a 2013 Dodge Challenger driven by 34 year-old Sharhonda Deane Burton of Independence, LA. Phillips was thrown 100 feet from the initial point of impact. She was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Burton was not injured in the crash. Burton is not suspected to have been impaired at the time of the crash. Blood samples have been obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The investigation is on-going. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes could prevent most pedestrian related crashes.
