TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE
August 25, 2016
Pedestrian Killed in Fatal Crash on US 190 in Tangipahoa Parish

Hammond, LA- Shortly after 12:30 AM on Thursday August 25, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to a fatal pedestrian crash on US 190 near the intersection of Shadow Creek Dr. in Hammond, LA. The crash claimed the life of a yet to be identified black female pedestrian.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that a 2004 Dodge pickup driven by 31 year-old Michael Drake of Albany was traveling westbound on US 190. The pedestrian was walking eastbound in the westbound lane near the center of the roadway when she was struck by the truck. The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Blood samples were obtained from the pedestrian and Drake. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Drake is not suspected of being impaired at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Troopers are in the process of attempting to identify the black female pedestrian. If anyone has any information pertaining to the crash or the identity of the pedestrian, please contact Louisiana State Police Troop L at 985-893-6250.

This is the second fatal pedestrian crash investigated by Troopers in Tangipahoa Parish in less than one week. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
