TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE August 06, 2016 Motorcyclist Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on LA-1055 in Kentwood Kentwood, LA- Shortly after 6:30 PM on Friday August 5, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle on LA 1055 near the intersection of LA 1054 in Kentwood. The crash claimed the life 42 year-old Robert M. Dykes of Franklinton, LA. The initial on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Dykes was riding a 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on LA 1055 at a high rate of speed. As Dykes was eastbound, 76-year-old Kentwood resident Henry Butler Jr. was driving a 1990 Nissan pickup truck westbound on LA 1055. Butler made a left turn into a private driveway. As Butler turned, he traveled directly into the path of Dykes’ motorcycle. The two vehicles collided in the eastbound lane. Dykes was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered severe injuries in the crash. Dykes was transported to North Oaks Health System by Acadian Air-Med in critical condition. Just before 9:00 PM, Dykes succumbed to injuries he sustained in the crash. Dykes was wearing an approved DOT helmet at the time of the crash. Impairment is unknown. Blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Henry Butler Jr. was properly restrained at the time of the crash. He was not injured. Butler submitted a voluntary breath sample, which showed no trace amounts of alcohol. The crash investigation is ongoing. Troopers would like to remind motorists to be aware of your surroundings when traveling on the road. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when riding their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death.
