TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE December 21, 2016 16 Year-Old Killed in Single Vehicle Crash on LA 433 Slidell, LA- Shortly before 4:00 PM on Tuesday December 20, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a single vehicle crash on LA 433 near Salt Bayou. The crash has claimed the life of 16 year-old Tyler Levy of Slidell, LA. The on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as 17 year-old Jonathan Lunsford of Slidell was operating a 2016 Hyundai Accent westbound on LA 433. For reasons still under investigation, Lunsford lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, overturned, and became submerged in the waterway. Lunsford and two juvenile passengers were able to escape the vehicle with minor injuries. Tyler Levy remained trapped within the vehicle. Levy was extricated from the vehicle by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division and St. Tammany Parish Fire District #1. Levy was transported to Oschner Medical Center-North Shore by Acadian Ambulance in critical condition. On Wednesday December 21, 2016, Levy succumbed to injuries he sustained in the crash. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash and all occupants were properly restrained. As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and any criminal charges will be referred to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office. Troopers would like to remind motorists, especially young drivers of the magnitude of the decisions made behind the wheel. The vast majority of crashes investigated by Law Enforcement are preventable, yet Troopers from Troop L have notified 53 families this year that their loved one did not survive a preventable crash. As we enter the Holidays, Troopers implore Louisiana motorists to always wear a seatbelt, never drive impaired, and eliminate distractions. These tips, coupled with sound decisions behind the wheel, will greatly reduce your chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash.
