Motorcyclist Killed in Head-On Crash on LA 1249

Hammond- Shortly before 6:00 AM on Wednesday June 7, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal head-on crash involving a motorcycle on LA 1249 [Pumpkin Center Rd.] north of LA 22 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 37 year-old Jason Paul Spence of Hammond.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Spence was riding a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on LA 1249. For reasons still under investigation, a 2004 Toyota Sequoia driven northbound on LA 1249 by 51 year-old Lesley Christine Dutreix of River Ridge, crossed into the southbound lane. After crossing the centerline, the Sequoia crashed head-on into the motorcycle. Despite wearing an approved DOT helmet, Spence sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Dutreix was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries. She was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital by Acadian Ambulance. As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were obtained from both drivers and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for testing. Dutreix was cited for improper lane usage. At the completion of the fatal crash investigation, Troopers will consult the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office in reference to any additional criminal or traffic charges.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration motorcyclist deaths occurred 27 times more frequently than fatalities in other vehicles, based on 2014 fatal crash data. Troopers urge everyone to share the road and be alert. Motorcyclists are encouraged to make themselves visible, to use DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets, and to always ride sober. Please speak to your loved ones about the importance of avoiding distractions, never driving impaired and always wearing a seatbelt. The conversation you have today could be the difference tomorrow.
