June 17, 2017

UPDATE: The motorcycle operator has been identified as 32-year-old Geza Ray Kovach Jr. of Loranger.
Motorcycle Tire Failure Leads to Fatal Crash on Interstate 55

Independence- At approximately 1:48 AM on Saturday June 17, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a three vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle on Interstate 55 two miles north of LA 40 in Tangipahoa Parish. The motorcycle operator was killed in the crash. The identity of the motorcyclist is currently unknown.

The preliminary crash scene investigation led Troopers to determine that a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling northbound on Interstate 55. The motorcycle sustained a tire failure and subsequently crashed. After crashing, the motorcycle was struck by a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by 52-year-old Kenney Ray Rogers of Magnolia, MS. The motorcycle operator was struck by a 2012 Kia driven by 36-year-old Sherry Lynn May of Bogue Chitto, MS. The motorcyclist was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Rogers and May were uninjured in the crash. Impairment is not suspected to have been a contributing factor. As part of the on-going investigation blood samples were obtained. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration motorcyclist deaths occurred 27 times more frequently than fatalities in other vehicles, based on 2014 fatal crash data. Troopers urge everyone to share the road and be alert. Motorcyclists are encouraged to make themselves visible, to use DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets, and to always ride sober. Please speak to your loved ones about the importance of avoiding distractions, never driving impaired and always wearing a seatbelt. The conversation you have today could be the difference tomorrow.
