TROOP L NEWS RELEASE June 30, 2017 Denham Springs Resident Killed in Fiery Crash on Interstate 55 Ponchatoula- On Friday June 30, 2017 at approximately 2:46 AM, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a fatal crash on Interstate 55 southbound near LA 22 in Ponchatoula. The crash has claimed the life of 22-year-old Alexander James Breaux of Denham Springs. The initial on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Breaux was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Interstate 55 in the right lane. For reasons still under investigation, Breaux’s truck crashed into the rear of a southbound 2015 Freightliner driven by 32-year-old Gregory Wilson of Spring Field, MO. After the initial impact, Breaux’s truck traveled off the right side of the roadway and through a ditch, before impacting a chain-link fence. Breaux’s truck came to final rest in the fence line and became engulfed in flames. Breaux was trapped inside the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Presently, alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor in this crash. Wilson was uninjured in the crash. As part of the on-going investigation, Wilson submitted a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present. While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, attentiveness behind the wheel continues to be a contributing factor in many of the preventable crashes that Troopers investigate daily.
