Troopers Investigating Fatal Motorcycle Crash on LA 36 in Covington

St. Tammany Parish- Shortly before 6:00 AM on Thursday May 18, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 36. The crash has claimed the life of 32 year-old Domario Rodricous Smith of Covington.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as Smith was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle westbound on LA 36. 52 year-old Honora Kennedy Richard of Covington was driving a 2006 Toyota Avalon eastbound on LA 36. Richard attempted to turn left from LA 36 onto Opelousas Street. As Richard turned, she crossed into the westbound lane of LA 36, into the path of Smith’s motorcycle. The motorcycle crashed into the passenger side of the Avalon. Despite wearing a helmet, Smith sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Richard was properly restrained and sustained minor injuries in the crash. She submitted to a voluntary breath test, which showed no trace amount of alcohol present. Impairment is presently not suspected to have been a contributing factor. As part of the on-going investigation blood samples were collected and will be analyzed by the Coroner’s Office. The findings in the crash investigation will be forwarded to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office for consultation of charges.

Please, take a moment and speak to your loved ones about the importance of safe decisions on the road. Remind them that simply wearing a seatbelt drastically reduces their chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Explain to them the dangers that impairment and distractions pose to all motorists. The conversation you have today could be the difference tomorrow.
