TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE February 24, 2017 Trooper Injured During Crash Investigation on Interstate 59 in St. Tammany Parish Slidell, LA- Shortly after 6:45 PM on Thursday February 23, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were in the process of investigating an injury crash on Interstate 59 just north of Interstate 10 in Slidell, LA. During the course of the investigation, a Trooper seated inside his fully marked police vehicle, was hit by another vehicle. The Trooper sustained minor injuries in the crash. The crash occurred as the Trooper’s vehicle was positioned on the left southbound shoulder of Interstate 59. The Trooper’s emergency lights were activated and he was seated inside his vehicle completing the initial on-scene investigation for an injury crash, which had recently occurred at that location. Despite the fact that the left lane was not closed, traffic behind the Trooper in the left lane came to a stop. A 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 22 year-old Ronald Dwayne Tillery of Boonville, Arkansas, was stopped behind another vehicle in the left lane attempting to merge into the right lane. While stopped in the left lane, Tillery’s vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2016 Nissan Sentra driven by 22 year-old Dlane Michael Harris of Slidell, LA. The impact propelled the Chrysler PT Cruiser forward and into the rear of the Trooper’s vehicle. At the time of the crash, the Trooper’s door was open as he was completing paperwork. The impact caused the Trooper to be ejected from his vehicle into the median. The Trooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to Ochsner Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance. The driver of the Sentra, Dlane Harris, was cited for Careless Operation and No Seatbelt. The driver of the PT Cruiser, Ronald Tillery was cited for Driving with a Suspended License and No Insurance. There were no other injuries in the crash. Last night’s crash represents the third crash this year where a Trooper in the Troop L area was hit and injured by a vehicle during the course of his duties. In all three crashes, carelessness or impairment were contributing factors. Thankfully, all three Troopers survived the crashes, but the results could have easily been much more tragic for the Troopers and their families. If you find yourself passing a police officer, first responder, or any other vehicle stopped on the shoulder, please slow down, move over, and pay attention to your surroundings. Aside from being the law, it is the right thing to do.
