TROOP L NEWS RELEASE April 22, 2017 Motorcyclist Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on LA 435 Abita Springs, LA– Shortly before 5:00 PM on Friday April 21, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle on LA 435 near Lake Street. The crash claimed the life of 28-year-old Covington resident Dwight Donnell Johnson. Based on the preliminary on-scene investigation, Troopers determined that Johnson was riding a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on LA 435. Physical evidence and witness statements indicated that Johnson was traveling at a high rate of speed and passing several other vehicles prior to the crash. A 2000 Ford F-350 driven by 60-year-old, Abita Springs resident, Earl Gregory, entered LA 435 from a private drive. The truck was towing a tandem axle gooseneck trailer loaded with pine logs. As the F-350 entered the roadway, Johnson’s motorcycle crashed into the rear axle of the trailer. Johnson was ejected from the motorcycle. Despite wearing a DOT approved helmet, Johnson sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital by Acadian Ambulance in critical condition. Shortly after his arrival, Johnson was pronounced deceased. Gregory was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was not injured. Impairment is not suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash. As part of the ongoing crash investigation, blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This incident represents yet another example of a preventable crash where the consequences of poor decisions claimed a life. The everyday mundane act of driving can be transformed into a life-changing event when unsafe decisions are made. Please, take a moment and speak to your loved ones about the importance of safe decisions on the road. Remind them that simply wearing a seatbelt drastically reduces their chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Explain to them the dangers that impairment and distractions pose to all motorists. The conversation you have today could be the difference tomorrow.
