TROOP L NEWS RELEASE April 27, 2017 Pedestrian Killed on LA 16 in Amite Amite, LA- Shortly after 1:00 PM on Thursday April 27, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a pedestrian fatality crash on LA 16 near LA 445 in Amite. The crash has claimed the life of 53-year-old Franklinton resident Raymond H. Smith. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as 26-year-old Hammond resident Marcela Irene Miller was driving a 2010 Ford Escape westbound on LA 16. Raymond Smith was working with a lawn maintenance crew at a private residence adjacent to LA 16. Smith was working on the shoulder of the roadway near the right fog line, when he was struck by the Escape. Smith sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. Miller was properly restrained and was uninjured. The investigation is ongoing and any criminal charges will be forwarded to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s Office pending the completion of the investigation. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes could prevent most pedestrian related crashes.
