Passenger Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Crash on US 190 in St. Tammany Parish

Mandeville, LA - Shortly after 8:00 pm on Wednesday night, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a serious injury crash on US 190 east of Mandeville, Louisiana. Today, Troopers learned that Jennifer L. Gibson, a 33 year old Ponchatoula resident, succumbed to injuries she sustained in the crash.

The initial on scene investigation revealed a Nissan Maxima operated by 35 year old Ponchatoula resident Miles B. Wood was traveling westbound on US 190. On scene evidence and witness statements suggest Wood was traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour. Jennifer L. Gibson was seated in the front passenger seat. Ahead of the Maxima, a Freightliner 18 wheeler operated by 35 year old Troy A. Brigham of Dallas, Texas was also traveling westbound on US 190 at a slower rate of speed.

Wood failed to brake as his vehicle closed the distance with the Freightliner. Subsequently, the front of Wood’s vehicle crashed into the rear of the Freightliner’s trailer. Wood was properly restrained and sustained moderate injuries in the crash. Gibson was not properly restrained and suffered severe injuries. She was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Brigham was uninjured in the crash.

Troopers do not suspect impairment to be a factor in this crash. However, blood was drawn from Wood and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Brigham provided a voluntary breath sample with no detectable traces of alcohol. Once the investigation is completed the case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for consultation of criminal charges.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Wearing a seat belt greatly reduces the chances of receiving serious injuries in a crash as well. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle to always remain buckled up, regardless of seating position.
