Troop L - NEWS RELEASE April 28, 2015 Troopers Working to Identify Pedestrian in Fatal Crash Natalbany, LA - Shortly after 11:00 pm on Monday night, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal pedestrian crash on US 51 near LA 1064 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of an unidentified male pedestrian. Troopers were able to determine a Nissan Altima driven by 22 year old Avery G. Campbell of Amite, Louisiana was traveling southbound on US 51 north of LA 1064 in Tangipahoa Parish. An unidentified male wearing dark clothing was walking northbound on US 51 in the southbound lane. As Campbell approached the pedestrian in his lane, he applied the brakes and took evasive action. Campbell was unable to avoid the pedestrian. The front of the Altima struck the pedestrian, throwing him into the northbound lane. After coming to rest in the northbound lane, the pedestrian was impacted a second time by an unknown vehicle that was traveling northbound on US 51. After impacting the pedestrian, the unknown vehicle made a U-turn and proceeded south on US 51 fleeing the scene. The second unknown vehicle was described as an early 2000’s model brown compact car. The pedestrian died as a result of the crash. Troopers are attempting to positively identify the pedestrian at this time. Campbell voluntarily submitted to a breath alcohol test, registering under the legal limit. Blood was drawn from the pedestrian and will also be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The Louisiana State Police have investigated over a dozen fatal pedestrian crashes on Louisiana roadways this year. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes could prevent most pedestrian related crashes. In the event of a crash, Troopers recommend relocating the crashed vehicles to a safe location out of the roadway. Anyone with information relating to the identity of the deceased pedestrian or the second vehicle are encouraged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop L at 985-893-6250.
