TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE Speeding and Impairment Are Factors in Interstate 12 Crash that Kills Motorcyclist Hammond – Last night at approximately 10:20 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle. The crash occurred on Interstate 12 eastbound near La. 3158 (Airport Road) in Tangipahoa Parish and it took the life of William Wilbert of Hammond. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Wilbert (W/M 46) and a 1994 Chevrolet truck operated by Wayne McGary (B/M 31) of Ponchatoula, were traveling eastbound on I-12, near mile marker 43, in the right lane. Wilbert, for reasons under investigation, was traveling at a high rate of speed, struck the rear of the Chevrolet, lost control, and was ejected. Wilbert suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. McGary and his front seat passenger, James Wright (B/M 64) of Independence, were restrained and not injured. McGary voluntarily submitted to a breath test which indicated no alcohol was in his system. Wilbert was wearing a D.O.T. approved helmet and Troopers suspect impairment on his part. Toxicology samples were collected from him; those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Troopers urge motorists to always designate a sober driver. Alcohol can impair visual ability, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a vehicle, and decrease reaction times. The many effects alcohol has on the body can begin with just one drink.
