| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE October 9, 2009 Two-Vehicle Crash Claims Life of Motorcycle Operator ZACHARY – Louisiana State Police investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle yesterday afternoon shortly before 4:00 pm in East Baton Rouge Parish on LA 410 (Blackwater Road) south of LA 64. Fredrick S. Spurgeon (W/M, age 33) of Zachary was driving a 2001 Dodge Pickup north on LA 410 when he attempted to make a left turn into a private drive. Spurgeon turned into the oncoming path of a 2007 Suzuki Motorcycle, being driven by Jeremy W. Hewitt (W/M, age 23) of Zachary. The motorcycle struck the front of the pickup, ran off the road to the right, and came to rest in the ditch along the west side of the roadway. Hewitt was ejected from the motorcycle and injured in the crash. Baton Rouge EMS transported Hewitt to Lane Memorial Hospital, where he later died due to his injuries in the crash. State Troopers suspect that speed may have been a factor in this crash, and the investigation remains open. No charges have been filed at this time. Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash. However, Spurgeon voluntarily submitted a breath sample to the Intoxilyzer 5000, which showed no detectable alcohol in his system. Troopers have also submitted a sample of Hewitt’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Contact Information: Tpr Russell G.
