Troop L - NEWS RELEASE February 12, 2015 Impairment and Lack of Seatbelt Use are Factors in Tangipahoa Parish Fatal Crash Tangipahoa Parish – This evening at approximately 6:15 pm, Troopers from Troop L responded to a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on La. 442 westbound at mile marker 19 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of Craig Chapman of Loranger. The initial investigation revealed that a 2001 Mercury Marquis, operated by Chapman (W/M 55), was traveling westbound on La. 442 near La. 1065. Chapman, for reasons under investigation, veered to the left, exited the roadway, lost control, and struck a culvert causing the Mercury to overturn. Chapman, the sole occupant, was unrestrained and partially ejected during the crash. He received life threatening injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is suspected and a toxicological sample was collected for analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists the importance of responsible choices during this Mardi Gras season. Please remember to always choose a designated driver, avoid all distractions while behind the wheel, and buckle up. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle (cars and trucks), regardless of seating position, always to remain buckled up (day and night). Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
