High Speed and Impairment are Factors in St. Tammany Parish Fatal Crash

Covington, La. - Early this morning at approximately 2:15 am, Troopers from Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on La. 25 northbound at mile post 1.2 in Covington. The crash claimed the life of Lloyd Giddens of Folsom.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Infiniti M37, operated by Giddens (B/M 27), was traveling northbound on La. 25 approximately a mile north of US 190. Giddens, for reasons under investigation, was traveling at a very high rate of speed, veered to the left, traveled off of the roadway, over-corrected to the right, and lost control. The Infiniti re-entered the roadway, began to roll to the left, exited the roadway to the right and struck two large trees.

Giddens was properly restrained; however, he received life threatening injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office. Impairment is suspected and toxicological samples were collected for analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police urge motorists to have a plan in place that includes a designated driver when consuming alcohol. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills, and decrease reaction times. Alcohol can begin to impair a person's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle after just one drink. Please choose to not drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, and always buckle up.
