TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE March 10, 2016 Unrestrained Driver Killed on Interstate 55 in Hammond Hammond, LA- Shortly after 6:30 PM on Wednesday March 9, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a three vehicle fatal crossover crash on Interstate 55 south of Interstate 12 in Hammond. The crash claimed the life of 24 year-old Eduardo Munoz-lachino from Tickfaw, LA. Crash scene investigators determined Munoz-lachino was driving a 2007 Dodge Pickup southbound on Interstate 55. For reasons still under investigation, Munoz-lachino’s truck exited the roadway, entered into the center median, and crossed into the northbound travel lanes. After crossing over, Munoz-lachino’s truck crashed into the left front of a 2014 Acura SUV driven by 51 year-old Trudy Shockley of Springfield, LA. Munoz-lachino’s vehicle continued southbound in the northbound lanes before crashing head-on into a 2016 Volvo 18-Wheeler driven by 60 year-old Mobile, AL resident, John Dewan McKeller. Munoz-lachino was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He was critically injured in the crash and pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Shockley and McKeller were both properly restrained. Both drivers were treated and released for minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation. Blood samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. While not all crashes are survivable, Troopers continue to stress the importance of proper seatbelt use. Vehicle occupants are far more likely to survive a serious crash when properly restrained.
