Troopers Investigate Fatal Cross-Over Crash on Interstate 10 in Slidell

Slidell, LA- Shortly after 9:30 AM on Friday March 18 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to a two vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 near the state line bridge in Slidell. The driver of a 2004 Mercedez-Benz was killed in the crash. Troopers are withholding naming the driver of the Mercedes pending notification to next–of-kin.

The initial on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine the Mercedes-Benz was being driven westbound on Interstate 10 in the left lane. For reason still under investigation, the Mercedes traveled off the roadway to the left and entered the center median. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle began to rotate as it traveled through the median towards the eastbound travel lanes.

As the Mercedes was traveling through the median towards the eastbound lanes, 22 year-old Jessica Sheffield of Auburndale, FL., was driving a 2014 Jeep eastbound on Interstate 10 in the right lane. Sheffield maneuvered her vehicle to the right shoulder in an attempt to avoid the impending collision. Despite Sheffield’s efforts, the front of the Jeep crashed into the driver’s side door of the Mercedes. The driver of the Mercedes was severely injured in the crash. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Sheffield sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was transported to Oschner Medical Center Northshore. Presently, Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor in this crash. As part of the on-going crash investigation, Troopers obtained blood samples from both drivers. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troopers continue to investigate too many preventable crashes on Louisiana roadways. Please take the time to speak to your loved ones about the importance of their decisions behind the wheel. Simply avoiding distractions, wearing your seatbelt, and driving sober could be life-changing decisions.
