TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE March 22, 2016 Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash Involving Garbage Truck Tickfaw, LA- Shortly after 7:30 AM on Tuesday March 22, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to a two vehicle crash involving a Garbage Truck on LA 442 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 64 year old Edward W. Stewart from Independence, LA. The initial on-scene investigation led Troopers to determine that Stewart was driving 1999 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on LA 442. Ahead of Steward, in the eastbound travel lane was a 2007 Mack Garbage Truck driven by 40 year-old Christi Nicole Davis of Kentwood, LA. The Mack Garbage Truck was stopped in the eastbound lane of LA 442 as it collected trash. For reasons still under investigation, Stewart failed to recognize the stopped Garbage Truck. Stewart continued straight ahead, crashing into the rear of the Garbage Truck. He was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Stewart was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. As the crash occurred, 33 year-old Joel Nathaniel Figueroa of Hammond was collecting garbage at the rear of the truck. Figueroa was seriously injured in the crash and transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Air-Med in critical condition. Presently, Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor in this crash. As part of the on-going crash investigation, Troopers obtained blood samples from both drivers. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, Troopers would like to stress the importance of avoiding distractions while driving. Research suggests that each day in the United States, over 8 people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Please stay alert by avoiding distractions, always wearing your seatbelt, and never driving impaired. Contact Information: | |||
