TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE April 2, 2016 Double Fatality Crash in Tangipahoa Parish Tangipahoa Parish: This afternoon, shortly before 1:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash on LA 1064 at Rufus Bankston Road. The crash claimed the lives of 72 year old Rita Adams and her mother, 97 year old Myrtis Jones, both of Hammond, LA. The initial investigation revealed that Adams was driving a 2012 Toyota Camry north on Rufus Bankston Road and stopped at the stop sign at LA 1064. The Toyota began to turn west on LA 1064 and was struck on the driver’s side by a 2004 GMC Sierra, driven by William Holton (age 30) of Hammond, LA, that was traveling east on LA 1064. Adams and Jones, the front seat passenger, were transported to North Oaks Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Holton and front seat passenger, Kayla Olah (age 31) of Hammond, LA both suffered minor injuries. All occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Impairment and speed are not considered factors of the crash. Toxicology tests are pending at this time. The crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections. Always watch vehicles as they approach and gauge the distance they are covering as they approach. Keep distractions to a minimum and keep your focus on the road. It only takes a fraction of a second for a crash to occur. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
