TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE April 24, 2016 North Military Road Head-On Crash Leaves One Dead Slidell, LA- Shortly before 6:00 AM on Sunday April 24, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle head-on crash on LA 1090 [N. Military Rd.] near the intersection of Crawford Landing Rd. The crash claimed the life of 40 year-old John C. Powe of Slidell, LA. The initial crash investigation led Troopers to determine that Powe was driving a 2015 Nissan Versa northbound on Military Rd. For reasons still under investigation, Powe’s vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and crashed head-on with a 2007 Lexus R350 driven by 48 year-old Pinky S. Mirpuri of Slidell. Powe was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Ochsner Medical Center - North Shore in critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Powe succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash. He was pronounced deceased by the on-duty emergency room doctor. Mirpuri and her front seat passenger, 49 year-old Sujit Kishu Mirpuri, were both properly restrained at the time of the crash. They were both transported to Lakeview Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. As part of the on-going crash investigation, Troopers obtained blood samples from both drivers. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. While not all crashes are survivable, research shows that simply wearing a seatbelt greatly reduced your chances of being killed or severely injured in the event of a significant crash.
