TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE February 8, 2016 Troopers Investigate Two Separate Fatal Crashes on the Northshore Shortly after 8:00 AM, Monday February 8, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to two separate single vehicle fatal crashes. The crashes occurred within minutes of each other and claimed the life of two individuals. The first fatal crash occurred on LA 437 north of Covington in St. Tammany Parish and the second crash took place on Interstate 55 north of Tickfaw in Tangipahoa Parish. At approximately 8:00 AM, 78 year-old Robert J Daix, Sr. of Bush, LA was driving a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis northbound on LA 437. For reasons still under investigation, Daix’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Daix’s vehicle crashed into a large oak tree. Daix was unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained severe injuries. He was pronounced deceased on-scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor in this crash. As part of the on-going crash investigation, the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office will provide a report as to Daix’s medical condition at the time of the crash. The second fatal crash occurred on Interstate 55 north of LA 442 in Tangipahoa Parish. Nakayla Sharree L Camp, a 19 year-old female from Little Rock Arkansas, was driving a 2003 Honda CRV southbound on Interstate 55 in the right lane. Camp’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and partially onto the grass shoulder. Camp over corrected to the left, causing her vehicle to veer across both southbound lanes and into the center median. After entering the median, Camp’s vehicle overturned several times, before finally coming to rest on its side in the northbound travel lane. Camp was un-restrained at the time of the crash. As her vehicle overturned, she was ejected and sustained severe injuries. She was transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Air Med in critical condition. Camp’s front seat passenger, 19 year-old Shayla Michelle Hayes was properly restrained, but was also severely injured in the crash. Hayes was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. As part of the on-going crash investigation, Troopers obtained blood samples from Camp. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Camp was issued a summons for careless operation and no driver’s license. On the completion of the investigation, Troopers will refer any additional charges to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s Office. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts use remains the most effective tool in avoiding serious injury or death in the event of a crash. Please take the time to speak with your loved ones about the importance of their decisions behind the wheel. Never drink and drive, always wear your seat belt, and eliminate distractions.
