Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE October 12, 2009 Passenger Killed in One-Vehicle Crash LIVINGSTON – Louisiana State Police investigated a single-vehicle serious injury crash this morning shortly before 6:30 am on LA 441 in Livingston Parish. Chelsey Lemaire (W/F, age 17) of Independence was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Beatle south on LA 441 near LA 1036 when she entered a left hand curve and lost control of her vehicle. The Volkswagen began to rotate counterclockwise as it came out of the left hand curve, crossed the on-coming travel lane, and ran off the road to the left, striking a tree with its passenger side. Lemaire’s passenger, Alyica Owens (W/F, age 13) of Holden, was injured in the crash and trapped in the vehicle. After fire fighters extricated her from the vehicle, she was transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance, where she was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff. Both Lemaire and Owens were properly restrained when the crash occurred. Lemaire suffered only minor injuries in the crash and was also transported to North Oaks Hospital. Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash. However, a sample of Lemaire’s blood has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Troopers suspect that speed was a factor in this crash. No charges have been filed, as the crash is still under investigation. Speed and driver distractions have been contributing factors in many of the fatal and serious-injury crashes Troopers have investigated over the past year. Louisiana State Police will work with local law enforcement and community organizations to enforce the state’s traffic laws and to educate the motoring public in an effort to put an end to these tragedies on our roadways.
