Edmonson, Superintendent Troop I Press Release May 28, 2011 Single Vehicle Crash Claims One Life; Troopers Searching for Driver St. Landry Parish- Today, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on I-49 north at milepost 42. The crash has claimed the life of one passenger, left another passenger in critical condition and state police are currently looking for the driver. According to investigating troopers, on May 28, 2011, at 2:50 p.m., a 2001 Ford Explorer was traveling north on I-49 at milepost 42. For unknown reasons, the driver of the vehicle ran off the left side of the road, entered the grass median, and the vehicle began to turnover. The vehicle came to rest in the median. The driver of the vehicle was seen fleeing from the scene on foot into a wooded area near the interstate. Both unrestrained passengers were ejected from the vehicle. Both passengers were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Upon arrival at the hospital, one of the hispanic males was pronounced dead at the scene. Another hispanic male remained in critical condition. Currently the identities of both passengers are being withheld pending the notification of next-of-kin. The driver is described as a hispanic male who may have a minor injury to his head and nose. He should be in his mid to late 20’s, has a medium build, and was last seen wearing a dark blue short sleeve shirt and khaki pants. Troopers, deputies from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, and officers with the Opelousas Police Department searched the area for the driver but were unsuccessful. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 337-262-5880. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Law requires that all occupants of motor vehicles wear a seatbelt. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash it will reduce your risk of injury in most crashes. For More Information Contact: | |||
