Demolition of U.S. 190 Bridge

BATON ROUGE- On Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., the Louisiana State Police Emergency Services Unit and the Department of Transportation and Development will coordinate the demolition of the U.S. Hwy 190 Bridge over the Amite River. Chicago Explosive Services has been selected as the explosive contractor for the job.

The bridge, located at the East Baton Rouge Parish/Livingston Parish line, is scheduled for demolition and removal as part of an on-going construction project by DOTD to replace the eastbound and westbound bridges over the Amite River.

The Louisiana State Police Emergency Services Unit regulates the explosives industry throughout Louisiana. State Police Explosive Technicians will be establishing a safe zone surrounding the site and monitoring the contractors to ensure a safe and controlled detonation along the bridge supports.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, including the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, Denham Springs Police Department and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, will be present to ensure public safety along the roadways and waterways near the detonation site.

U.S. Hwy 190 will be closed to all traffic eastbound and westbound beginning Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. and will be re-opened at 12:00 p.m. Traffic will be re-routed near 4-H Club Rd (La Hwy 1032) in Denham Springs and at Old Hammond Hwy (LA Hwy 426) in East Baton Rouge Parish. Motorists traveling between Baton Rouge and Denham Springs are encouraged to use Interstate 12 as an alternate route.

A staging area will be provided to the media for coverage of the demolition. The staging area will be located near the intersection of U.S. Hwy 190 and Old Hammond Hwy.
