| Troop I - NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release October 12, 2011 Bicyclist Killed in Crash St. Landry Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash involving a bicycle and a vehicle on the I-49 Frontage Road north of Grand Coteau. The crash claimed the Lafayette woman. According to investigating troopers from Troop I, on October 11, 2011, at 7:21 p.m., 50-year-old Roxanne Richard of Lafayette, LA, was riding a Schwinn bicycle south on the I-49 Frontage Road, on the east side of I-49. A 1993 Chevrolet truck driven by 46-year-old Glaston Alexander Jr. of Breaux Bridge, LA, was approaching Richard from behind. Richard, who was riding next to another bicycle near the center line, was struck from behind by Alexander. Richard was ejected from the bicycle and died as a result of her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Alexander and the other bicyclist were not injured in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police reminds all persons who ride bicycles on the road that State Law requires that all bicycles be equipped with a lamp mounted on the rear that emits either a flashing or steady red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear. The law also requires that the bicycle is equipped with a light mounted on the front that emits a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front. The lights are required to be on between sunset and sunrise, and times of inclement weather. Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway is also required to ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable. For More Information Contact: | |||
