Troop I - NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release October 31, 2011 Crash Claims One Life and Leaves Three Juveniles in Critical Condition Iberia Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on LA 86 at LA 680 that claimed the life of a St. Martinville woman and left three juveniles in critical condition. According to investigating troopers, on October 30, 2011, at 7:02 p.m., a 1995 Honda Accord driven by 33-year-old Shafika Maturin of St. Martinville, LA, was traveling west on LA 86 approaching LA 680. For reasons still under investigation, Maturin ran off the right side of the road, entered a ditch, and rotated clockwise. The front of the vehicle struck a driveway causing it to overturn several times. The vehicle came to rest upright on LA 680. Maturin and five passengers, were not properly restrained and were ejected from the vehicle. Three of the passengers were juveniles, ages 13, 11, and 7, all were taken to local area hospitals in critical condition. The other two passengers, 22-year-old Chaz Lopez and 36-year-old Belinda Maturin both of New Iberia, LA, were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Shafika Maturin was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to wear their seatbelt. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes. For More Information Contact: | |||
