Late Night Crash Claims One Life

St. Mary Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 182 near Penn Road. The crash claimed the life of a Jeanerette man.

According to the investigating troopers, on September 30, 2011, shortly after 11:00 p.m., 25-year-old Matthew Romero of Jeanerette, LA, was driving a 2007 GMC truck west on LA 182. For unknown reasons Romero drove off the right side of the road and entered a ditch. Romero’s vehicle stuck a ditch embankment and overturned several times. Romero, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Romero was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to wear their seatbelt. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
