| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: July 17, 2011 Iberia Parish Fatal Crash Late this afternoon, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from New Iberia, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 674 at Blanchard Road. The crash involved a 2003 Ford Focus, driven by Luis Villasenor-Martinez (W/M 31 yrs) and a 2006 Kia Amanti, driven by Shirleen Aucoin (W/F 70 yrs) of Jeanerette, LA. The Ford was west bound on LA Hwy 674 when Villasenor-Martinez exited the right side of the roadway onto the shoulder. After exiting the roadway, he overcorrected his vehicle and traveled into the path of the east bound Kia. Aucoin attempted to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful. Villasenor-Martinez was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead. Aucoin was wearing her seatbelt and received minor injuries. She was transported to Iberia General Hospital for treatment. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. This is the 44th fatal crash and the 46th fatality Troop I has investigated this year. Louisiana State Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to wear their seatbelt. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
