Single Vehicle Crash Claims One Life

Yesterday, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on LA 357 at Napp Lane. The crash claimed the life of one person and sent three others to the hospital.

According to investigating troopers, on August 6, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., a 1998 Honda CRV, driven by 41-year-old Thelma Maynard of Opelousas, LA, was traveling south on LA 357. For unknown reasons, Maynard failed top negotiate a curve in the roadway, ran off the left side of the road and entered a gore between two intersecting roads. The vehicle overturned and came to rest on its roof facing north on Napp Lane. Maynard as well as the other three occupants in the vehicle were unrestrained and were ejected from the vehicle.

Maynard was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. The other three occupants of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital with injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Toxicology samples were obtained from Maynard and have been submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police reminds everyone that state law requires all persons riding in motor vehicles be properly restrained. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash it will reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
